Dr. Hellman learned to love optometry first hand through her own care. “Between age 20 and 23 I went from basically nothing to minus 4, which is a huge change in my vision. So I used to see my optometrist every six months…I really liked how he was helping me. Your eyes are changing constantly and it’s nice to have somebody pay attention to how much your vision is changing.” She received her undergraduate degrees in microbiology and chemistry from Loyola University in Chicago and her Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) from the Illinois College of Optometry. She is a student fellow of the American Optometric Association.
Dr. Hellman was raised in Bulgaria and moved to Chicago at age 19 with her parents and brother. It was there she met her husband, who is currently in an ophthalmology residency at U.C. Davis. They presently live in Sacramento with their three dogs.
In her spare time, Dr. Hellman enjoys bikram yoga, the outdoors, and music. “I love optometry more and more every day,” she said. “I am so excited to be part of the EYEcenter team.”
